Built by BDI Resourcing to help internationally trained GPs orient themselves on Australia's three overlapping workforce classifications — the rules that determine where an IMG can practise and bill Medicare.
Under s.19AB of the Health Insurance Act 1973, IMGs must work in a DPA catchment for the 10-year moratorium to access Medicare. 824 non-overlapping catchments, reassessed each March.
Remoteness scale from MM1 (major metro) to MM7 (very remote). Areas MM2–MM7 are automatically DPA. Tasmania and the Northern Territory are entirely DPA. MMM also drives rural incentive payments and HELP debt reduction.
This atlas is for orientation only. Before an IMG commits to a role or lodges a visa, DPA status should be verified against the official Health Workforce Locator.
